What a great day out Saturday at Scarborough Beach in Narragansett, RI for Awesome Relics New England’s 2nd Annual Penguin Dig.
All the worrying we did about the weather was thankfully a huge waste of energy, because it was the most beautiful day of 2017 so far. After the dense morning fog cleared, the sun was shining down from Detectorist’s Heaven, leading this fun loving group into a well deserved winter reprieve with temps in the 60’s most of the day.
The enthusiasm for this hunt was infectious. It’s timing was perfect–February–who hasn’t had enough of winter by February? A group hunt at this time of year is a sure way to lift people’s spirits, and a great reminder that warmer weather and a new detecting season is on its way.
The event was very well organized–They started on time, ended on time, didn’t waste time, and everyone was having a good time. So a big THANK YOU to Awesome Relics New England, all those that supported the hunt, and everyone who came out to the hunt. It was Awesome!
Sounds like a blast, Allyson. I’ve never heard of that particular event before, what organization/entity produces it? Is it a beach only hunt? I’m guessing yes, as it would be pretty difficult to dig anywhere else, in most other February’s.
Did you snag any nice keepers? Been an UNUSUALLY mild Winter here in NJ, and even throughout much of the Northeast. If only all Winter’s were like that 🙂
I’m guessing you’re all primed and ready to go for detecting season, as it’s only a few more weeks away. Keep us posted on your exploits, and HH in 2017!
Hey Joe-
It was only the 2nd penguin dig, but there was a great turnout. It’s a Facebook group, Awesome Relics New England. Yup, they hold it on the beach. It was a seeded hunt, I did get a silver quarter, a token, some strange foreign coins, and some euros.
I know you think the winter was mild, but I’ve been freezing for months :-). Just want it over.
I’m sure I’ll have some more stories to write this season, and I’m looking forward to the BONE hunt in NH in April. I think there’s some spots left, why don’t you join us?
Sorry for the late reply, Allyson. I say every year that I’m finally going to the BONE event, but it never comes to fruition. Honestly, I’m lucky I have enough time to get out and dig locally, as it is. So, I’m a bit jealous of you, in that regard 🙂 From all I’ve heard, George is an amazing guy, and he’s done an awful lot for this hobby over the years. I’d like to go just for the opportunity to meet him.
You and I really need to meet up for a hunt though, as it’ll be a blast. You’re welcome here anytime you fancy, but just know that we don’t have the same abundance of wooded spots that CT does. They tend to be South of me, as I’m in Northern NJ. So, we hit a lot of the older parks, and hunt the woods occasionally when we want to ‘spice things up.’
Let’s try for a meet-up this Spring or Summer, if our schedules permit. In the meantime, keep those blog posts coming!
No problem Joe. I don’t always get a notification when someone leaves a comment, so I’m often delayed in my replies as well. I totally get the not having the time to get out thing. There’s a sucky thing called work that always gets in the way. My current position doesn’t allow me the leniency I’ve had with time off in the past. Sigh…
It took me 3 or 4 years to finally coordinate a trip to the BONE, but it was well worth it. I had a blast. Any hunt that is all day long for days on end, regardless of finds, is a great hunt. If you can’t go for the whole thing, I think you can still get in for a day hunt. Love to see you there.
Yes, I will find time to meet up with you this season for sure. We do have a lot of wooded areas here, but I’m still new to this area of CT myself, so finding sites has been a challenge. I’ve spent the winter seeking out new sites though, so by spring I should have quite a few to share.
Happy hunting, and see you soon-Allyson
