There’s a new metal detecting book, hot off the press, and it’s aptly named The Metal Detecting Bible.
Written by Brandon Neice, also known as “Dr.Tones”, of the YouTube channel “Dirt Fishin America”, Brandon is an avid and experienced well known detectorist. He has been treasure hunting since the 1990’s, and has penned this experience into a well written book full of tips, advice, and insider secrets for helping you find those hidden treasures buried just beneath your feet.
The “Bible” starts out with the basic designs, and types of machines, along with a really good explanation of how they work. After reading this section, I no longer feel like I will get that “Deer in the headlights” expression the next time someone starts talking all detector technical to me. Kudos to Brandon, for putting it down in a way that even this female can understand.
He goes on to explain things such as masking, threshold, ground balancing, sensitivity and discrimination, all in an easily understood language that newbie or veteran alike will be able to follow. He mixes in some metal detecting humor here and there, which even if you’re new to the hobby, I’m sure will have you laughing out loud.
There’s a section on tools, and how to dig a proper hole, which will be a great review for some of the not so tidy folks out there, and is an excellent tutorial for the beginner. It’s got all the basics, but with a twist–he doesn’t just say “Buy a pinpointer”, he goes into detail on why and how to use each item–Information that I wish I had available to me when I began this hobby.
After the basics, the book gets into how to recognize old places, masonry, framing styles, etc… and even has a section on dating the bane of detectorists–those annoying nails.
And while most detectorists know that to find the old stuff, they have to find the old sites, it’s not always easy or apparent where to start looking. The “Bible” has a great section on scouting old sites, which being in the hobby for a while, I am very accustomed to, but there were a few times when I was like-oh yeah, I forgot about that, serving as a good reminder to me, and it is sure to be an excellent starting point for those new to metal detecting.
There is a chapter devoted to obtaining permission, utilizing the tried and true methods, along with some methods I hadn’t thought about, which after reading, if you don’t get at least one permission out of it, I would be surprised. And I got my biggest chuckle out of how to dress and not dress for success in gaining permission, with photos to boot, but you’ll just have to read the book to experience the full effect of that.
If prospecting is your thing, there’s a whole section devoted to that, which I found very interesting because I’ve never delved into that area of the hobby. If ever do decide to do some prospecting though, I now know something about it, what gear to use, and where to start looking.
All good things must come to an end, but before it ends, you will also learn about jewelers marks, how to clean, preserve and sell your finds, and more.
The bottom line:
The Metal Detecting Bible is a great reference for anyone new to the hobby of metal detecting. It is a thorough guide to the hobby, with all aspects explained in an easy to read and understand format. With this guide, and the tips, tricks and insider secrets it contains, you will find yourself going from treasure seeker, to treasure finder in no time.
